Pilates and Pregnancy
Pilates has proven to be very beneficial for pregnancy.
Pilates requires you to move consciously-using the breath to revitalize and
energize-something needed for labor! Every movement in Pilates comes from
the "center", helping you focus on those muscles necessary for labor and
delivery. We will also focus on strength, especially in the shoulders and
in the upper back, which will assist with nursing. In addition, as your
body weight starts to become heavier in the front due to the baby, balance
becomes increasingly important. Finally, due to the extra weight in front,
the hip flexors and hamstrings become extremely tight. We will help you
stay flexible by keeping the muscles stretched. However, in addition to
having your OB/GYN's release to practice equipment-based Pilates, we require
women to begin a Pilates program before beginning Pilates for your safety and
the baby's!
